HAW at the AHA on the History News Network

Historians Against the War will be hosting an open Strategy Forum at the AHA Meetings. The forum will be held on Friday, January 7, from 5 to 7 pm, in the Grand Crescent Room in the Westin Seattle Hotel. This will be an opportunity for all of us to exchange ideas about the ongoing war in Iraq, the peace movement, and historians' place(s) within it. We're asking attendees to think about the following questions in advance of the meeting:

1) What kinds of peace activities have worked -- and have not worked -- on your campus, and in your community?

2) How has the war changed the atmosphere and/or work conditions at your institution?

3) What particular roles should historians play in the larger peace and social justice movement?

4) What initiatives should HAW focus on in the coming year?

Following the Strategy Forum, HAW will be having its annual business meeting. The most important item of business at that meeting will be the election of a new Steering Committee. We're extremely pleased that we have received twenty-four nominations for positions on the SC. Up to twenty of these nominees will be elected at the meeting; at its discretion, the Steering Committee can then add as many as eight more members to ensure regional, ethnic, gender, intellectual, and professional diversity on the SC. A ballot will be distributed at the business meeting. The names of the nominees, as well as their specialties, institutional affiliations, statements of interest, and other information can be found on HAW's website at:

At the business meeting there will also be opportunities to get involved in various HAW projects. Of course those who won't be able to be at the meeting are also always welcome to become more involved! Please visit our website -- http://www.historiansagainstwar.org -- for more information about HAW and its activities.

Hope to see many of you in Seattle!

Happy Holidays,
Ben Alpers
