Obama's Surge Begins in Afghanistan: What Are We Going to Do About It?

An additional three thousand U.S. troops have arrived and are stationed near Kabul. Why isn't the antiwar movement loudly protesting as it did in 1970 when Richard Nixon widened the Vietnam War by occupying Cambodia? When will HAW issue a news release deploring this action?

HAW will issue a statement when we have reached a democratic consensus on the steering committee about the wording. The SC is currently deliberating on a new statement of purpose and unity. The drafts I have seen include Afghanistan as a central issue.

The HAW has already issued a statement opposing the U.S. presence in Afghanistan. We as an organization agree that we oppose any additional troops, so there is no need to debate the politics of this. Why can't we put out a one-paragraph statement opposing the new surge? How much time and effort could that take?

If we have already issued a statement against the U.S. presence in Afghanistan, and the surge is part of that presence, then I fail to see the urgency for a one paragraph statement when we have several bigger projects in the works.

(As always, what I say here does not represent an official SC policy position.)
